Sixteen families in Woodford Hill are expected to receive the keys to newly constructed three-bedroom homes as the Government continues its national housing programme.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced during a press conference on Wednesday that the homes will be handed over on Friday, September 11, days after 11 families received housing units at Canefield East.
The Canefield East properties form part of 204 homes and apartments scheduled for distribution across nine communities.
Skerrit said the Government’s housing policy was based on the principle that every Dominican should have an opportunity to live in a safe and secure home, regardless of income or personal circumstances.
Priority is being given to vulnerable families, single-parent households, senior citizens, disaster-affected residents and people who cannot independently meet their housing needs.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that demand remains high and that many applicants are still waiting for assistance.
“As resources become available, we will continue to respond in a fair and systematic manner, ensuring that assistance reaches those with the greatest need,” he said.
Work will also continue on other housing developments, home repairs and additional forms of housing support.
Skerrit said the Government would press ahead with the programme despite criticism because secure housing gives families greater stability and improves living conditions.
