The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, and the elected president, Edmundo González, They announced this Sunday that they will not participate or be an obstacle in the dialogue process between a sector of the opposition and the government headed by Delcy Rodríguez, scheduled for August and with the support of the United States.
In a joint statement, they explained that they did not participate in the negotiations or in the format established for the meetings, but stated that “they will not be an obstacle.”
“Members of the 2015 National Assembly and representatives of the regime announced the creation of a mechanism between the two in whose design, construction and operation, we do not participate; therefore, It is not up to us to explain its scope and its decisions,” they expressed.
Venezuelan opposition leaders said they hope that the dialogue, which will begin next August 1, will achieve, among other objectives, a “presidential electoral schedule prompt”.
They assured that they will evaluate this process “based on concrete and verifiable achievements: the recovery of the idemocratic institutions, the release of all political prisoners, real guarantees for all actors without exclusions, a timely presidential electoral schedule and full respect for popular sovereignty.”
In addition, they clarified that they did not participate in the “design, construction and operation” of that dialogue, headed by the president of Parliament, the Chavista Jorge Rodríguez, and the former opposition representative Dinorah Figuera.
In the text, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and the opposition leader, who recently met with the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), to evaluate this upcoming dialogue, announced, without giving details, that they will return to Venezuela to “accompany the people, tour the country and build” a national agreement for reconstruction.
Machado and González Urrutia pointed out that the oil nation “is devastated by more than a quarter of a century of a regime that looted and repressed the people” and that the recent earthquakes cruelly increased the devastation.
With this statement, the sector headed by Machado and González made its position clear regarding the conversations promoted for next month, marking a gap with the parliamentarians of 2015 and the government representatives involved in the process.
