José de Jesús Gámez Bustamante, 65 years old, colonel of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), was released from prison on the afternoon of this Thursday, April 23, after spending more than 11 years in prison.
The information was released by the president of the Foro Penal organization, Alfredo Romero, through the social network X. The lawyer explained that the soldier was detained without trial.
“He is very sick. He was held in the 26 de Julio prison, in San Juan de los Morros, Guárico state,” Romero reported.
Serious health problems
In a report carried out by Effect Cocuyo in December 2025the colonel was listed as one of the political prisoners with serious health problems.
The organization Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón said at the moment that the soldier suffers from neurological and psychiatric conditions.

The NGO noted that Gámez Bustamante, like seven other political prisoners, has brain damage and cognitive disorders.
The official was in prison since January 21, 2015, after being identified by Nicolás Maduro as allegedly responsible for the burning of a supply network in 2015. The soldier was detained along with his wife, Carmen Alicia Gutiérrez Acevedo.
