A man was arrested in Fyzabad after police found 13.7 grammes of cocaine in his possession during an anti-crime exercise on Independence Day.
The arrest took place around 11 a.m. on Monday, when officers from the South Western Division Task Force and the Fyzabad/Oropouche Criminal Investigations Department were conducting patrols in the area.
Police said officers were proceeding along Solomon Street, Khan Trace, Fyzabad, when one of them noticed a man walking along the roadway.
According to the police, the man looked in the direction of the police vehicles before turning and walking along a nearby track.
The officers stopped their vehicle, approached the man and identified themselves as police officers.
A search was conducted, during which officers allegedly found a transparent plastic packet containing a quantity of cocaine in the man’s pants pocket.
He was arrested and the substance was seized.
Police said the cocaine was subsequently weighed and amounted to 13.7 grammes.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
The arrest was one of several police activities carried out as part of anti-crime operations across the country on the public holiday.
Earlier on Monday, officers attached to the Maracas Police Station conducted a roving road traffic exercise in the Maracas, St Joseph area as part of Operation Resolute Shield.
The exercise was conducted between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., with officers paying particular attention to Maracas Royal Road, Acono Road, Guaratta Trace and Lluengo Village.
Police said several vehicles and persons were stopped and searched during the operation.
No illegal items were found during those checks, according to the police.
However, officers issued 25 fixed penalty notices to motorists for various traffic offences.
The exercises form part of ongoing police operations aimed at detecting illegal activity and addressing offences on the nation’s roads.
Police have continued to conduct increased patrols, searches and road checks in several areas under Operation Resolute Shield, with officers targeting both criminal activity and traffic violations.
The Fyzabad investigation remains ongoing, and police have not disclosed whether additional arrests are expected.
