The parents of Havanna James and Miccoy Mc Nicholls will see their children start their secondary education come September 7,2026, with much ease and less stress, after their children met the criteria for a scholarship from the Marriaqua United Friendly Society (Bunpan).
The two 2026 scholarship recipients along with 11 other bursary recipients, were acknowledged on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at an award ceremony at the society’s Freeland headquarters.
Havanna the daughter of Shameca Butler of South Rivers, who attended the Union Methodist Primary School, placing 67th for girls and 133rd overall in the CPEA, with a percentage of 90.4%, is set to attend the St. Vincent Girls’ High School when the new school, while Miccoy the son of Shaneika Mc Nicholls of Richland Park, who attended the Marriaqua Government School, placing 92nd for boys and 217th overall with a percentage of 87.4%, is set to begin his secondary education at the St. Vincent Grammar School.
Addressing those attending the ceremony, the society’s President Leroy Jackson, shared a brief history of the Bunpan Society, while emphasising the importance of maintaining active financial membership.
He said the Bunpan Scholarship programme, which began in 1985, has so far awarded a total of 62 secondary school scholarships, including a one-off Theophilus Shallow Athletic Award, established in August, 2022 in honour of the late Theophilus Shallow, a former Society President and noted sportsman.
