«Additional HIMARS systems will secure the deep-strike capability required for the Estonian Defense Forces and NATO, significantly strengthening both our independent defense capability and deterrence. Deepening cooperation with Lockheed Martin will also directly support the development of Estonia’s defense industry,” said Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur.
Last spring, the first six HIMARS rocket launchers purchased from Lockheed Martin arrived in Estonia. With the acquisition of three new HIMARS launchers and additional ammunition, Estonia continues its cooperation with the world’s largest arms manufacturer.
«This is purposeful and long-term work that supports the implementation of NATO defense plans. It is also extremely important that Lockheed Martin is making a direct investment in Estonia, as such investments in national defense and the defense industry make Estonia as a whole more secure,” Pevkur added.
«The contract signed with Lockheed Martin will help involve the local defense industry. »In addition to the rocket launchers and ammunition, the new contract also includes an investment in Estonia’s defense industry, which will result in the creation of HIMARS component maintenance capability in Estonia that can be provided by our own companies,» said Janari Kasemets, Category Manager for Combat Platforms at the Estonian Center for Defense Investments (ECDI).
According to him, it is welcome that Lockheed Martin is ready to involve local companies. «The 11-million-dollar investment in Estonia will, at Lockheed Martin’s proposal, be combined with investments in other nearby countries such as Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Finland to create broader regional expertise and ensure the necessary services locally,» Kasemets added.
The mobile and combat-proven HIMARS provides modern capabilities, including precision weapons that support integrated fire missions and can strike point or area targets at distances of more than 300 kilometers. Thanks to its strong interoperability with NATO and allied systems, HIMARS can be easily integrated and rapidly deployed as needed.
The additional HIMARS rocket launchers are scheduled to arrive in Estonia in 2027.
