The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago is inviting the public to celebrate World Steelpan Day 2026 with an afternoon of music, culture and history at Mille Fleurs in Port-of-Spain on Saturday.
The event, titled PAN Heritage: The Experience, will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is designed to showcase the evolution of the steelpan while highlighting the cultural traditions that gave rise to Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument.
The family-friendly event will feature live steelpan performances by local musicians, interactive workshops for people of all ages and a heritage exhibition tracing the development of the instrument from its early beginnings to its global recognition.
Visitors will also be able to experience demonstrations of Tamboo Bamboo and the Engine Room, two important elements of Trinidad and Tobago’s musical heritage that played a significant role in the creation and evolution of the steelpan.
According to the National Trust, the event seeks to educate, entertain and inspire a deeper appreciation for the steelpan’s cultural significance while encouraging younger generations to embrace one of the country’s greatest contributions to the world.
Organisers said the programme offers an opportunity for families, students, music enthusiasts and visitors to learn about the instrument’s rich history through interactive displays and performances.
They described PAN Heritage: The Experience as more than a celebration, saying it is intended to immerse patrons in the story of the steelpan and the people whose creativity and innovation shaped its remarkable journey.
World Steelpan Day is observed annually to recognise the global impact of the steelpan, the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century. Originating in Trinidad and Tobago, the instrument has become an international symbol of Caribbean culture and is played in communities, schools and concert halls around the world.
The National Trust said hosting the event at the historic Mille Fleurs property provides an ideal setting to celebrate the country’s cultural heritage while bringing together music, education and community engagement in one location.
The organisation is encouraging members of the public to attend and experience the sights and sounds of the steelpan through performances, exhibitions and hands-on activities celebrating the instrument’s enduring legacy.
It said the event is intended to foster a greater understanding of the steelpan’s place in Trinidad and Tobago’s history and its continuing influence on music and culture worldwide.
