The University of the West Indies (The UWI), in partnership with Jamaica’s Office of the Prime Minister, is set to host a major public discussion on reparatory justice featuring President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, during his official visit to Jamaica.
According to a UWI press release, the Special High-Level Reparation Dialogue will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 4:30 PM Jamaica time (5:30 PM Eastern Caribbean/AST) in the Eon Nigel Harris Council Room at The UWI Regional Headquarters. The event will also be streamed live on UWItv, allowing audiences across the Caribbean and around the world to follow the discussions.
The dialogue will feature a conversation between President Mahama and Sir Hilary Beckles, taking place during the Ghanaian leader’s official visit at the invitation of the Jamaican government.
The UWI also said that the event comes at a time when international discussions surrounding reparatory justice continue to gain momentum. The university noted that the dialogue also reflects its ongoing role in fostering regional and global conversations on issues of historical significance and public policy.
During the session, Sir Hilary will engage President Mahama in a discussion linking historical realities with modern-day policy, focusing on the evolving reparations movement, the responsibilities of governments, and the role institutions can play in advancing justice and equity.
The programme will begin with opening remarks from Sonjah Stanley Niaah. President Mahama and Sir Hilary Beckles will then deliver remarks before taking part in a question-and-answer session with attendees. Closing remarks will be delivered by a representative of Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.
