Last week the U-15 championship for girls and boys was held in Aasiaat, and until week 32 Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat (KAK) holds Greenlandic championships in several age groups around the country.
Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat (KAK) has kicked off this year’s outdoor Greenland football championships. Last week, the U-15 championship for girls and boys was held in Aasiaat.
The tournaments for the Greenlandic championship in outdoor football for both children and adults are held in different places in the country.
To ensure the running of the women’s Greenland championship, KAK is working on a solution where clubs from Nuuk can participate with a joint team.
This year’s Greenland championships conclude with the men’s tournament, which will be played from 3 to 9 August.
Girls and boys fight for the championship
This year’s outdoor championships were kicked off with the U-15 tournament in Aasiaat, where T-41 was the organizer.
– In connection with the start of the Greenlandic championships in outdoor football, the U-15 tournament began on 7 July in Aasiaat with T-41 as organiser, says chairman of KAK, Kenneth Kleist.
KAK will secure the women’s tournament
In order for a Greenland championship to take place, at least four teams must be registered. In recent years, this has been a challenge in several ranks, especially among women.
Therefore, KAK is now investigating the possibility that the clubs in Nuuk can field a joint city team so that the tournament can be carried out.
– What I call a city team, we must discuss in KAK, and then the tournament committee must investigate whether female players from several clubs can gather in one team. The goal is that NÛK, GSS and B-67 can compete as a joint Nuuk team, says Kenneth Kleist.
According to KAK, it is important that the female players get the opportunity to play for the Greenlandic championship, both for the development of women’s football and for the sake of the national team.
– It is important that all female players who believe they have the level for the national team participate in the Greenland Championship and show themselves. That way, national coach Danny Jung can also assess the players’ level, says Kenneth Kleist.
KAK also states that the women’s national team is scheduled to play training matches in the Faroe Islands and participate in the Island Games next year.
The men’s championship
The Greenland Championship for men takes place in Maniitsoq from 3 to 9 August.
Before the final round, the teams play regional qualifying tournaments, where they fight for places at the championship.
At the same time, KAK wants to strengthen men’s football by creating more tournaments and getting more clubs from villages and smaller towns back into the competition.
– The board wants clubs from villages and smaller towns to participate in the tournaments again. We must also decide whether in future it will be a requirement that the clubs first participate in local tournaments, says Kenneth Kleist.
Volunteers are essential
The running of the Greenland championships depends to a large extent on the volunteers in the local sports associations. According to KAK, so far it appears that the host clubs have the necessary volunteers.
– We expect the clubs that apply to organize the Greenland championships to have enough volunteers, says Kenneth Kleist.
