SYDNEY: A man was found dead after a police officer was shot in the leg in the Australian state of Queensland on Friday night.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) said in a statement on Saturday that officers were called to a domestic violence incident at a home in the small town of Yengarie, 215 km north of Brisbane, around 5:44 p.m. local time on Friday.
Upon arrival, a 45-year-old man allegedly approached and shot at the officers, hitting a 36-year-old first-year constable in the leg.
The constable was dragged to safety by fellow officers and airlifted to the hospital in Brisbane in a stable condition.
Following the shooting, police issued a public safety declaration and the 45-year-old man was found deceased around 9:20 p.m. during a search of the property by specialized officers.
Nobody else was injured.
QPS Inspector Paul Algee told reporters on Saturday that two women and two children were present at the property but safely self-extracted.
He said he was “incredibly proud” of the actions of the responding officers.
“The officers that were working with the first-year constable that was shot saved his life through their heroic actions,” Algee said.
Police established a crime scene at the property and have commenced an investigation. – Xinhua
