Twenty-seven-year-old Christopher Witzel died on Monday night after being taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he reportedly complained of severe pain. Police have not disclosed the cause of death, and the circumstances surrounding it remain under investigation.
According to reports, investigators were looking into whether Witzel had been connected to a shooting reported in Orange Walk last week.
His family has strongly disputed those claims. According to relative, Witzel died from kidney and liver failure and insisted he “had no part of no shooting at Orange Walk.” The family also rejected reports that police transported him to hospital.
Witzel was no stranger to police. In 2024, he was arrested during the State of Emergency and charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, using threatening words and being found without lawful explanation inside a dwelling. He was also detained under the SOE while investigators looked into a separate shooting.
In 2018, Witzel was charged with three counts of attempted murder, along with wounding, harm and two counts of using deadly means of harm, following a gang-related shooting on Mopan Street in Belize City that injured three people, including a woman and a minor.
