The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force (CDPF) has launched an investigation into the death of a 47-year-old stevedore following an industrial accident at the Woodbridge Bay Port in Fond Colé during the early hours of Friday.
The latest information comes after the Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority (DASPA) confirmed that a fatal workplace accident had occurred at the Woodbridge Bay Port during overnight cargo operations.
According to the police statement, the deceased has been identified as Otis Francis of Tarish Pit.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred at about 12:30 AM while Francis was involved in cargo-loading operations aboard the cargo vessel Tropic Opal. Police said he sustained fatal injuries after being struck by a shipping container.
Officers responded to the scene, where members of the Crime Scene Unit carried out investigations. An on-call medical doctor later examined Francis and pronounced him dead at the scene.
His body has since been transported to Lyndhurst Funeral Home, where it will remain pending a post-mortem examination.
The CDPF has extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Francis as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
DASPA also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and said it is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as the investigation proceeds.
Police say enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
