Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has reaffirmed its commitment to combating money laundering, following a recent court ruling that imposed stringent penalties on a company convicted of money laundering.
In a statement, the Public Prosecution said the Muscat Court of Appeal (Criminal Circle) issued a judgment, convicting the company of a money laundering offence.
The court ordered a fine of RO50,000, the confiscation of all proceeds linked to the crime, including any revenues and benefits generated from them, as well as the closure of the company’s business premises.
Investigations conducted by the Public Prosecution, in cooperation with the relevant authorities, uncovered large-scale financial transfers involving digital currencies that were traced to criminal proceeds. The probe also found that victims had been deceived through fraudulent investment schemes promising unrealistically high returns, prompting them to transfer funds based on false claims.
According to the investigation, those funds were subsequently subjected to a series of complex financial transactions aimed at concealing their criminal origin, disguising their source and integrating them into the financial system to appear as legitimate commercial returns.
The Public Prosecution stressed that Oman continues to adopt a firm approach in tackling money laundering and related financial crimes through coordinated investigations, strict enforcement of the law and judicial action against offenders.
It reaffirmed that such measures are essential to safeguarding the national economy, strengthening confidence in the financial sector and ensuring that those involved in laundering criminal proceeds are held fully accountable.
