The Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sayed Ali Zerrougui, confirmed that Algeria is working to modernize its digital infrastructure and enhance its presence in international bodies concerned with the Internet, while accelerating the adoption of modern technologies such as the sixth version of the Internet Protocol.IPv6“, with the aim of improving the quality of digital services, enhancing network security, and supporting national digital sovereignty.
This came during his supervision today, Tuesday, July 14, in Algiers, of a specialized meeting on the future of the Internet in Algeria, which was organized in cooperation with the African Authority responsible for the distribution of Internet addresses, and was attended by Algerian members of the Authority and all actors in the digital sector in Algeria.
The transition to the sixth version of the Internet Protocol “IPv6” was among the most prominent topics raised during the meeting. It is a protocol that provides a huge number of addresses sufficient for billions of new devices in the future, after “IPv4” addresses became insufficient due to the large increase in the number of devices around the world.
Just as every home needs its own address, every device connected to the Internet (phone, computer, camera, smart device…) needs its own digital address.
Adopting IPv6 for Algerian users contributes to improving the ability of Internet networks to accommodate a larger number of devices, with the increasing use of smartphones, computers, and Internet-connected devices.
It also supports the development of electronic services and modern applications, and helps improve the efficiency of network connectivity in some cases, according to what the ministry stated in its statement.
The Ministry indicated in its statement that this protocol is “an important basis for expanding the use of future technologies such as smart cities and the Internet of Things, as well as ensuring the readiness of the digital infrastructure to keep pace with the continued growth of digital services in the coming years.”
