Naalakkersuisut has decided to set up a working group to prepare a plan for the development of fishing in Avanersuaq. The Qaanaaq Fishermen’s and Trappers’ Association is pleased that there are now concrete plans to develop fishing.
The purpose of the working group is to redevelop fishing in Qaanaaq, informs naalakkersuisoq for fishing, trapping, agriculture and self-sufficiency, Peter Borg.
With a view to drawing up a long-term plan for the development of fishing, Peter Borg writes that the participants to the working group will be called after the summer holidays.
Working group based on the same model as in East Greenland
Just like Naalakkersuisut’s development plan for fisheries in East Greenland for the period 2024-2030, a working group consisting of all relevant actors must be set up. The group must help draw up a long-term development plan based on the same model as the one drawn up for East Greenland.
In the working group for East Greenland, KNAPK’s main board, local representatives, fishermen from East Greenland, advisers in fishing and catching, Arctic Prime Fisheries ApS, Royal Greenland A/S and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq participate.
The fishermen of Qaanaaq are happy
The Qaanaaq Fishermen’s and Trappers’ Association is pleased that Naalakkersuisut now has plans to promote fishing in Qaanaaq.
– When I read the news, I finally felt that we were seen and heard. It is really uplifting, says a board member K’ulutana Twig.
In Qaanaaq, halibut is only fished today when there is sea ice. When the investigations into where the halibut stay in the summer have been completed, it is expected to be clarified how the fishery can be developed and which tools must be used.
– We have high expectations that surveys of the fish stocks will be carried out Siorapalukand that development is taking place both within production and port facilities, says K’ulutana Kvist.
