An extraordinary building located in the town of Bol on Croatia’s Brac Island resembles an old unfinished construction when viewed from the outside. However, when you enter the building, a completely different and remarkable story emerges. In the middle of the huge walls, there is still a small house that is said to have not been sold years ago.
It is said that in the late 19th century, the Vuković family, one of the wealthy sailor families of the town of Bol, wanted to build a large and ostentatious mansion. For this reason, they started collecting land in the region and allegedly made offers above market value to many property owners.
While most people in the town agreed to sell their land, a homeowner named Marko, known by the nickname “Sila”, turned down the offers and did not give up selling his house.

THEY BUILT GIANT STRUCTURES AROUND THE HOUSE
It is said that upon this situation, the Vuković family began to build the mansion directly around Marko’s house in order to dissuade him from his decision. The walls of the large structure begin to rise just a few meters from the small house. The aim was to persuade Marko to sell his house as he felt under pressure. However, according to local accounts, Marko did not back down and did not leave his home.
THE PROJECT REMAINS UNHALF
The most striking part of the story is that the large mansion project could not be completed. Rumor has it that three brothers from the Vuković family lost their lives during a sea voyage to obtain construction materials. It is said that after this incident, construction stopped and the project was left unfinished.
“THE HOUSE WITHIN THE HOUSE” THAT HAS REACHED TODAY
It is said that Marko continues to live in his small house in the middle of the large building. Although it is not known for certain today how much of this story is completely true, the building is known as one of the most interesting architectural landmarks of Brac Island. Over time, this “house within the house” continues to attract attention not only with its extraordinary appearance, but also with its narrative symbolizing an individual’s resistance to a grand project.
