“Due to undesirable associations” it has been decided to rename the village of Kancersils in Tīnūžu Parish of Ogre County to Muižkalniem, according to the decision of Ogre County Council Members.
The village of Kancersilu was created by developing a detailed plan in 2005. On April 16 of this year, the municipality of Ogre region received a request from SIA “Stila aentūra”. to change the name of the village in Muižkalnie.
“Stila Agency” owns the majority of real estate in the village of “Kancersili”. The company complains that the existing name of the village creates unwanted associations with the English word “cancer” or cancer.
On the other hand, the proposed name “Muižkalni” is a place name of Latvian origin, which better corresponds to Latvia place name traditions and principles of using the national language in public space.
The municipality has also ascertained the opinion of the Tīnūžu Parish Residents’ Council regarding the change of the name of the village. The council did not support changing the name of the village, because the historical name is part of the county and History of Latvia.
On the other hand, the municipality claims that Kancersili was created in 2005, by dividing the property “Lielkancersili” in the rural area, and the village territory was not formed in the place of a historical village or other older inhabited territory. Therefore, changing the place name in itself would not have a significant impact on cultural and historical heritage preservation, because the name of a relatively recently created administrative unit would be changed, not the designation of a historically established settlement, explained in the council’s decision.
National language center On May 14, he gave a positive opinion for changing the name of the village.
On June 15, a report was received from “Stila agenția” about a survey of land owners about changing the name of the village to “Muižkalni”, according to which 98% of land plot owners are in favor of the name change.
