The death toll from two powerful earthquakes in Venezuela has reached 920. More than 3,300 people were injured in various degrees. In the country’s worst-hit state of La Guaira, the army has established control in order to effectively organize rescue operations and ensure public safety.
This was announced by the Chairman of the National Assembly of the country, Jorge Rodríguez, on June 26. According to him, safety measures for the continuous operation of lifeguards reinforced.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabelo announced that all highways leading to La Guaira were temporarily closed. He said that this measure is aimed at limiting the entry of unnecessary people into the area, reducing epidemiological risks and speeding up rescue operations.
The strongest earthquake in 125 years
On June 24, two strong earthquakes were observed in the north of Venezuela, only 39 seconds apart. Their magnitude was 7.2 and 7.5, respectively. Experts estimate the second earthquake as one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the country in the last 125 years.
The greatest destruction was recorded in the state of La Guaira, north of the capital Caracas. This area is a strategically important region where the country’s main international airport and the largest seaport are located.
Venezuela’s Acting President Delsy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency in the country due to the natural disaster.
Thousands of people may be trapped under the rubble
The Minister of Internal Affairs reported that more than 70,000 families were affected by the natural disaster in La Guaira. The government has expanded search and rescue operations and started delivering drinking water, food and other humanitarian aid to the population.
However, rescue operations are slow due to lack of equipment and specialists in many areas. Local mass media report that there are interruptions in the supply of electricity and drinking water, and in some places cases of looting have been reported. According to initial estimates, thousands of people may still be trapped under the rubble.
International community support
A number of countries are providing humanitarian and technical assistance to Venezuela. In particular, the US sent two warships and transport planes to support rescue and humanitarian operations.
Also, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that rescue experts would be sent to the country and, if necessary, six Bundeswehr A400M announced that it is ready to engage a military transport aircraft. It is expected that this international assistance will speed up rescue operations and provide the necessary assistance to the affected population.
