It remained sealed for 2,600 years: An intact burial chamber was found behind a giant stone block

It was determined that the large stone block covering the entrance of the tomb, discovered in the necropolis located approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Rome, remained as it was originally placed. In this way, the burial chamber was protected from external intervention for centuries, and the artifacts and human remains inside survived to the present day largely intact. Researchers state that such sealed tombs are extremely valuable in understanding the life and funeral traditions of the Etruscans.

ARTIFACTS REFLECTING DAILY LIFE WERE FOUND IN THE TOMB

According to preliminary investigations, the grave contains the remains of two people, one of whom is probably a man. The researchers made this assessment based on a spear tip thought to have been left next to one of the skeletons for ceremonial purposes. In addition, large storage containers, Etruscan black-polished bucchero vessels, jugs and a Greek-made aryballos used to carry perfume or oil were also unearthed. These items are expected to provide important information about both daily life and funeral rituals.

A SEALED TOMB WAS DISCOVERED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THE SAME AREA

The new tomb was found just a few meters away from the first intact Etruscan tomb that the same research team uncovered in 2025. The skeletons of four people and more than 100 grave goods were discovered in the previous grave. Since most of the more than 600 rock tombs documented in the region to date have been looted since the Roman period, the discovery of two consecutive sealed tombs is seen as an extraordinary development in the world of archaeology.

Scientists now plan to conduct detailed analyzes on both the skeletons and grave goods. Thanks to the investigations, it is aimed to obtain more comprehensive data about the ages, health conditions, kinship relations of the buried people and the burial traditions of the Etruscan society.
