Nearly a year and a half after the tragic events in Magdeburg, a German court has issued a verdict in one of the most high-profile cases of recent years. A Saudi Arabian citizen who, in December 2024, drove a car into a crowd of Christmas market attendees has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Six people were killed in the attack, and hundreds were injured.
The verdict was delivered on Friday at the court in Magdeburg. Judges found Taleb Abdul Jawad guilty of carrying out a deadly attack on the Christmas market that took place in December 2024.
The man was sentenced to life imprisonment. During the proceedings, he was held responsible for six counts of murder and 338 counts of attempted murder.
Investigators: He acted for personal motives
As established by the prosecutor’s office, the perpetrator had been preparing the attack for a longer period of time. Investigators stressed that his motivation was not ideological in nature. According to their findings, he acted primarily out of personal motives.
During the proceedings, the man was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder.
Worked as a psychiatrist
Taleb Abdul Jawad was a citizen of Saudi Arabia who had previously been granted asylum in Germany. He worked as a psychiatrist and also publicly presented himself as an activist fighting for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia.
The attack took place during a Christmas market in Magdeburg in December 2024. The perpetrator drove a car into a crowd of event participants.
As a result of the attack, six people lost their lives, including a nine-year-old boy. More than 300 people were injured, and the tragedy shocked public opinion in Germany and across Europe.
