For those who want to lose weight, the first thing they think about is ‘what to eat’ and ‘how much to exercise’. But more important than the dos and don’ts for a successful weight loss journey are the bad habits that we must avoid completely. Yesterday, certified nutritionist and fitness trainer Shikha Surana shared her experience. Shikha took to Instagram to share the story of how she reduced her weight from 72kg to 49kg without starving herself, without the help of harsh crash diets or detox teas. Shikha’s success mantra was ‘Stop doing wrong things’. Know which are those 8 habits that Shikha gave up to change to a healthy body.
∙ Skipping breakfast
Many people think that skipping breakfast can cut calories. But Shikha’s experience was different. Skipping breakfast slows down the body’s metabolism. This can lead to fatigue throughout the day and uncontrollable overeating at night. Shikha changed this habit and started eating a nutritious breakfast within an hour of waking up in the morning.

∙ Calories from beverages
Many people drink too much fruit juice and other drinks under the mistaken belief that they are healthy. Juices, tea with a couple of spoons of sugar and cold coffee add a lot of unnecessary calories to the body. Realizing that calories in liquid form can harm the body, Shikha cut them out completely and switched to plain water, black coffee and unsweetened tea.
∙ Eating too much healthy food
Don’t think that food is healthy and you can eat as much as you want. Faux nuts (makhana), dry fruits, and peanut butter are healthy, but they also contain calories. This is where ‘portion control’ or quantity control comes in handy. Even if it is a healthy food, if you eat it beyond the limit, you will gain weight.
∙ Skipped weight training
Many people have a misconception that just running on the treadmill for hours will help you lose weight. Shikha explains that she saw a real change in her body composition when she started doing weight lifting exercises along with cardio exercises. It will help to increase the strength of the muscles and give a good shape to the body.
∙ Less sleep and excessive stress
Many people do not understand the importance of sleep in their fitness journey. Sleeping late and excessive stress can increase the level of cortisol hormone in the body. This can increase cravings for junk foods and sweets. To solve this problem, Shikha made it a habit to sleep exactly 7 to 8 hours daily.

∙ Constantly eating out
Many people think that outside food is not harmful if eaten in small quantities. But that is wrong. Excess oil, salt, and hidden calories in restaurant meals can harm weight loss. So Shikha switched to home-cooked, nutritious meals as little as possible from outside.
∙ An ‘all or nothing’ attitude
This is something that happens to many of us. There are people who think that if they miss a day or eat a slice of pizza, their weight loss journey is over, they give up on the diet altogether. But a slice of pizza won’t undo your hard work. Mistakes are natural. Shikha says consistency is more important than perfection.

∙ Wait for inspiration
Don’t always wait for a special motivation to exercise and diet. Instead of putting things off thinking ‘let’s start next Monday’, take steps towards your goals today. In the beginning it is proper discipline that drives us forward rather than motivation.
