The European Union will react quickly and decisively if the United States follows through on President Donald Trump’s threats to impose 100 percent tariffs on European countries if they impose digital services taxes on American companies, the European Commission said.
“All taxes are by their nature non-discriminatory and apply equally to all large companies, regardless of their origin. Unilateral measures aimed at such legitimate policies are unjustified. If implemented, the EU will react quickly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy,” the Commission emphasized.
US President Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on all goods from countries that impose a digital services tax on US companies.
“A number of European countries are currently debating imposing a digital services tax on US companies. Some of these countries are really close to doing so. Let this announcement serve as an announcement that any country that imposes such a tax will immediately face 100 percent tariffs on all goods sent to the US,” he wrote.
The Commission points out that the EU and its members have the sovereign right to regulate economic activities on their territory, in accordance with their democratic values and international obligations.
The Commission points out that the European Union “constantly supports a global solution for fair taxation of the digital economy, in line with the conclusions of the G7 finance ministers. This remains our preferred path and we are ready to work constructively to achieve it”.
