President Luis Abinader issued Decree 393-26, by which he declares several lands located within the Cuevas de Borbón or Pomier Anthropological Reserve Natural Monument of public utility and social interest.
The press release sent from the Presidency of the Republic indicates that the measure is aimed at reinforcing the conservation of one of the most important natural, archaeological and cultural heritages of the Dominican Republic; In addition to the action, it will allow expanding the protection, monitoring, environmental restoration and preservation actions of this protected area located in the San Cristóbal province, guaranteeing the sustainability of its natural resources and its historical legacy for present and future generations.
“The initiative reaffirms the Government’s commitment to the defense of the national heritage and the protection of spaces of high ecological and scientific value, in compliance with the State’s responsibility to preserve its environmental and cultural riches,” states the document sent to the media.
The government provision contemplates the acquisition of the land located within plot number 405 of cadastral district number 02 of the San Cristóbal municipality, through the procedures established by law and with resources from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
It instructs the Ministry of the Environment, the General Directorate of National Assets, the State Attorney and the Registry of Titles, to carry out the administrative and legal actions necessary for the execution of the measure.
The decree establishes that, if an agreement is not reached with the owners on the value of the land, the Ministry of the Environment will carry out the corresponding legal procedures for its acquisition, in accordance with the law and with funds from the institution. In addition, it provides for the necessary administrative actions of the competent entities and is based on Law 492 of 1969 and other provisions that protect the Pomier Caves as national heritage.
Decree number 393-26 was issued by President Luis Abinader on June 15, 2026, as part of the Government’s actions aimed at strengthening the protection of the Cuevas de Borbón or Pomier Anthropological Reserve Natural Monument, ensuring the protection of a unique archaeological treasure in the Caribbean and strengthening the country’s commitment to environmental conservation and the protection of its historical identity.
