The bodies of at least 15 migrants, including women, have been recovered from Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast in the past week. They are believed to have died in the sinking of the boat.
This information was reported by the news agency Reuters on Saturday, citing security, navy and medical sources.
According to a Navy source, at least 10 people were rescued alive in the same incident. According to rescuers, there were about 61 people on board the boat.
According to the sources, the bodies were recovered from different areas along the coast of Tobruk city in Libya, near the border with Egypt. Two security officials said many of the recovered bodies were decomposed. It is feared that more bodies may be washed up in different parts of the coast.
Photos released by the Tobruk Red Crescent show volunteers collecting bodies from rocky shores and storing them in special bags.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011, the Libyan coast has become one of the main routes for migrants to Europe. People from various countries in Africa and the Middle East try to reach Europe by dangerous sea routes in the hope of freedom from conflict, poverty and uncertainty.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, another 13 migrants were rescued after a boat capsized off the coast of Tripoli, the capital of Libya. Emergency treatment and support center under the country’s Ministry of Health said that the rescued people have been given necessary medical care.
