He Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR) Bonao, whose construction work began this Friday, June 19, 2026, will be a modern venue based on the rules of the United Nations Organization and the prison reform model of the Dominican Republic, which is an example in the region.
This was reported by the head of the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC), Roberto Santana Sánchezwho explained that in the new CCR “there will be areas for medium and maximum security, also education and compulsory work programs, it will have an agricultural area and all the programs that help us ensure that those deprived of liberty are released in adequate conditions.”
Santana Sánchez led together with the Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED), Victor “Ito” Bisonó and the senator of the province Monsignor Nouel, Hector Acostathe groundbreaking ceremony for the CCR-Bonao, which will have capacity for 700 prisoners, in the Juma Bejucal community.
In turn, Santana Sánchez maintained that the province’s economy will be boosted in the construction process of the work and when it is in operation. “There will be around 200 employees, educators, doctors, drivers, maintenance and agricultural workers here.”
Also 200 young people who will be in charge of security, who will be selected from Bonao.
“Public calls will be made, for security. They have to be high school graduates, at least high school graduates. Also for educators, doctors and nurses,” he noted.
In another aspect, when interviewed by journalists prior to the start of the work, the head of the DGSPC said that in the purge of personnel they have canceled and brought to justice 52 employees, which sends a message to the rest of the collaborators.
In addition, he reiterated his exhortation to family members to collaborate so that their relatives deprived of liberty have a different life without drugs.
“It breaks my soul for the lady who tried to bring drugs into Las Parras, it breaks my heart that that lady is currently imprisoned in Najayo, it breaks my soul because being imprisoned she cannot take care of her family, her children,” said Santana Sánchez.
In that sense, he said that society has to collaborate so that the prison system works well.
Context of the CCR-Bonao
“This new Bonao rehabilitation center will have a capacity for 700 inmates and more than 22 thousand square meters of construction”, explained the MIVHED minister, Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, who together with Santana and provincial authorities placed the first block that symbolizes the beginning of the construction of the CCR-Bonao.
Bisonó explained that the facilities will have classrooms, libraries, workshops, farms, sports areas, service and security spaces, because social reintegration requires opportunities, discipline, and training and support.
Likewise, Senator Héctor Acosta valued the beginning of the work as a national event. “Because here we are prepared to help build this center,” said the legislator.
The new CCR will strengthen the penitentiary capacity of the region and will allow people deprived of liberty in this province who are currently serving sentences in other parts of the country to remain closer to their families, favoring rehabilitation processes, family bonding and social reintegration.
As part of the plan expansion and modernization of the Dominican penitentiary systemMIVHED and DGSPC have begun the construction of the Correction and Rehabilitation Centers (CCR), in the towns of Azua, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Santiago Rodríguez, Cotuí and now in Bonao.
The work is part of the Dominican Government’s vision of transforming detention spaces into true centers of reform and second chances, complying with the highest international architectural and security standards.
The blessing of the event was carried out by Father Nicolás Suazo Belén of the San Pedro and San Pablo Parish. The provincial governor, Adela Tejada Gil, and the president of the Neighborhood Council, Daniel Enrique Ovalle Rodríguez, as well as legislators and civil and military authorities of the province, participated in the activity.
