Ilie Bolozhan was re-elected chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL). The decision was made on June 21 at an extraordinary party congress. In addition, the delegates approved two resolutions: banning a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and expelling from the party members who would support the creation of a government with the Social Democrats. The congress also demanded the resignation of several party representatives, including Adrian Veshti.
As reported by PNL, Ilia Bolozhan received 1,769 votes, which is 96% of the votes of the congress participants.
Speaking to the participants of the congress, Bolozhan emphasized that his party had proven the possibility of a different approach to governing the country.
“The most important thing that our party has demonstrated is that in Romania it is possible to govern the state differently: with respect for public funds, without arrogance, telling people the truth and setting rules that are the same for everyone. Officials should not waste taxpayers’ hard-earned money,” Bolozhan said.
Bolozhan also clarified that the PNL is “on the right side of history” and offered the party “a new path based on liberal values.”
“I propose to restore a worthy, courageous and principled party that will once again win the trust of Romanians and become a force for the restoration of Romania. We will return to power not through compromises, without justifying lies and avoidance of responsibility. We will return as a strong party, capable of realizing our project of a strong, modern and prosperous Romania,” the politician emphasized.
The congress also adopted two political resolutions.
“The first confirms the position of the PNL that a new coalition with the PSD is impossible, and also provides for the expulsion from the party of those members who vote for, support or take part in creating a government with the Social Democrats,” the party said.
The second resolution calls for the resignation from the party of former PNL Secretary General Lucian Bode, MEP Rares Bogdan, Adrian Vesti, Hubert Tuma and former Justice Minister Alina Gorgiu.
If they do not submit their resignations from the party by June 22, 12:00, the PNL leadership will begin the process of expelling them.
In addition, the delegates approved changes to the party charter. In particular, they introduced a system of program platforms for candidates for leadership positions, created the National Permanent Bureau as the main governing body of the party, and strengthened provisions on party discipline.
Previously, Romanian President Nicusor Dan put forward representative of the National Liberal Party, Adrian Vesti, for the post of Prime Minister. This happened after Eugen Tomac refused his mandate, failing to gain the support of parliamentary parties.
Following the announcement, PNL leader and interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on social media that the president had not informed the party in advance of his intention to appoint Adrian Veştiu as prime minister.
“Neither the PNL leadership nor I personally received prior information from the President about this decision – this is a hostile act, an obvious attempt to split the PNL, an intention that has been traced since the overthrow of the government in the interests of the PSD,” he said.
Ilie Bolojan added that the National Liberal Party will soon hold a meeting of the National Political Bureau and make an official decision.
Prior to this, representatives of the PNL and the Union for the Salvation of Romania (USR) stated that they did not support the option of a technocratic government proposed by Tomac.

According to the Romanian Constitution, the candidate for the position of prime minister has ten days to present the government program and list of ministers. During the same period, parliament must consider the issue of confidence in the new cabinet of ministers.
To form a government, Tomac needed to secure the support of at least 233 deputies.
