Bhutan Football Steps onto a Bigger Stage with Hummel Partnership

Bhutan Football Federation signs a landmark MoU with Hummel, marking a major step forward for Bhutanese football through global partnership, youth development, and international exposure.

Bhutan Football Steps onto a Bigger Stage with Hummel Partnership

The Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) marked a major milestone with the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hummel on 14 April, during a special ceremony held at Gold Fish Resort in Gelephu.

The event brought together several distinguished guests, including His Eminence Laytshog Lopen Sangay Dorji, His Excellency Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, Mr Christian Stadil, the Honorary Council of Bhutan in Denmark, Bhutan Football Federation President Dasho Ugen Tshechup, Executive Committee members, officials, and invited guests.

The partnership is being seen as a significant step forward for football in Bhutan, strengthening international collaboration while reflecting shared values between Bhutan and Hummel.

A partnership rooted in shared purpose

In his address, Dasho Ugen Tshechup said the collaboration goes beyond products and sponsorship, and is rooted in a shared vision of sport as a force for unity and positive change.

“We realised how much Hummel and Bhutan as a nation share the same ideology of using sport to bring the globe together. It is not only the quality of your products that excites us, but the ideology that you represent. We hope that we can play a small role in materialising your vision of making this globe a better place through sport.”

Mr Christian Stadil echoed the sentiment, describing the partnership as a purpose-driven journey grounded in shared philosophy.

“This partnership is not only about providing some cool kits, but it is also about supporting a journey, or rather, an adventure. At Hummel, we believe that sport is not only about performance, but it is also about purpose, community, identity, and making a difference.”

Highlighting what he described as a strong alignment with Bhutan’s values, he added:

“We feel deeply connected to Bhutan’s philosophy, where progress is measured not by sudden steps, but by steady commitment and belief. Bhutanese football is a story of perseverance. What stands out is not the ranking, but the resilience.”

    New national jersey unveiled

The ceremony also featured a video presentation by Hummel, followed by the unveiling of the new Bhutan national team jersey.

The kit was presented by national team stars Chencho Gyeltshen and Pema Zangpo, alongside rising academy talent Tshendru Tshering Pelzom. The jerseys were later blessed by His Eminence Laytshog Lopen Sangay Dorji, symbolising what many at the event described as a new chapter of pride and identity for Bhutanese football.

A growing football journey in Bhutan

Football in Bhutan has steadily evolved over the years, shaped by resilience and a quiet but determined push for growth. The Bhutan Football Federation, established in 1983, became a member of the Asian Football Confederation in 1993 and joined FIFA in 2000, marking Bhutan’s formal entry into the global football community.

On the international stage, Bhutan’s journey has often been defined by perseverance. The national team captured global attention in 2015 with a historic 1–0 victory over Sri Lanka in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers — its first-ever win in the competition. Domestically, organised competitions such as the Bhutan Premier League and national-level tournaments have helped nurture local talent and raise the standard of the game, while players like Chencho Gyeltshen have brought international exposure to Bhutanese football.

Today, Bhutanese football continues to grow with a strong emphasis on youth development, community participation, and long-term progress — values that closely mirror the philosophy highlighted in the new partnership with Hummel.

    Formal signing and next steps

The formal signing of the MoU was carried out by Christian Stadil and BFF General Secretary Ugyen Wangchhuk, officially cementing the partnership between the two sides.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Mr Stadil said:

“Today, we begin a new journey together, one guided by purpose, patience, and spirit. We are very proud to join Bhutan’s football adventure and to help bring its story to the world.”

According to BFF, the partnership includes a three-year agreement featuring bespoke national team kits, FIFA-approved equipment, and plans to strengthen Bhutanese football’s presence through international markets and fan engagement.

The ceremony concluded with a token of appreciation presented to Mr Stadil, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a meaningful and long-lasting collaboration.

The partnership between Hummel and the Bhutan Football Federation is expected to play an important role in advancing football in Bhutan by supporting players, inspiring communities, and bringing Bhutan’s football journey to a wider international audience.
