ACP Sagramsingh sent on leave | Local News

Municipal Assistant Commissioner of Police Surrendra Sagramsingh has been sent on immediate administrative leave as investigations intensify into the killing of municipal police corporal Anuska Eversley and the theft of firearms and ammunition from the San Fernando Municipal Police Station.

Sagramsingh confirmed yesterday, he was sent on leave.

“Well, yes. I’ve been sent on administrative leave for the course of the investigation,” he told the Express by phone.

When asked if this was a regular occurrence during the course of an investigation, Sagramsingh said it was not.

    Recovered

Recovered: Thirteen firearms, 12 magazines, 288 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and ten 12-gauge cartridges were successfully recovered after a Highway Patrol South Operations Team intercepted a white Kia K2700 with three male occupants yesterday. These items are from the theft of guns and ammunition from the San Fernando Municipal Police Station on Sunday. In total, 43 firearms and over 900 rounds of assorted ammunition have been recovered.

He added: “But it happens at times and when it happens they explained that alright, there would have been recommendations from somewhere, so I’m good with that.”

Asked about the reason given for him being placed on leave, he said, “Because of the investigation ongoing and they wouldn’t want you to be around performing duty, and to ensure transparency and thing in case they see a connection.”

However, he added that he was “good with that” as “it goes with the territory”.

“The fact is I am in my career as a police officer (and) have been bent on service. So, definitely you would have preferred to have served. But if the authorities feel that is the best thing to do at the time, I am compliant,” he said.

Sagramsingh told the Express he has been head of the TTMPS for six years.

He was present at a news conference in San Fernando on Sunday, following the incident, where he joined Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro and Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander at the head table, responding to questions from the media.

Eversley, a mother of three, was found dead in the station at 4.40 a.m. on Sunday, and an autopsy found she was beaten, strangled and stabbed.

The Express yesterday, contacted Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen, who confirmed the ministry’s acting permanent secretary had issued an administrative directive to Sagramsingh not to report for duty.

Pressed for details, Ameen said she was unable to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation.

Police had detained ten people up to yesterday and recovered a quantity of firearms and ammunition which they believe were stolen from the station after Eversley was murdered.

Senior sources told the Express that preliminary police investigations point to a group of municipal officers who have been involved in selling guns and ammunition to the criminal underworld, and information obtained so far is that Eversley may have been part of this circle.

This has been ongoing for the past six to eight months, and raised questions as to how it was allowed to take place unnoticed, a senior source told the Express.

    Precautionary measure

Sagramsingh was issued a letter dated April 21, 2026, by Peter Mitchell, acting permanent secretary at the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, informing him that he is to proceed on immediate administrative paid leave to preserve the integrity of the police investigation.

The letter made it clear that Sagramsingh’s leave was a precautionary measure and did not constitute any misconduct or liability on his part.

The PS stated that the ministry was aware that investigations were currently being conducted by the police into the killing of Eversley and the theft of firearms and ammunition.

“In light of the foregoing, and having regard to your position as Municipal Assistant Commissioner of Police and Head of the Municipal Police Service, the Ministry considers it necessary, in the public interest and to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigations, to issue the following administrative direction,” stated the letter.

Sagramsingh was “directed to refrain from reporting for duty and from performing any functions or exercising any authority in your official capacity, with immediate effect and until further notice from the Ministry. For the avoidance of doubt, this measure is administrative and precautionary in nature and does not constitute a finding of misconduct or liability on your part”.

The letter stated that Sagramsingh is required to remain available to the ministry and any authorised investigative body, and to co-operate fully with any lawful requests made in connection with the said investigations.

    Eversley a crime suspect

Sources told the Express the depth of the police probe is far-reaching and also points to municipal police officers falsifying station records to cover up the stolen items.

The Express was told police are investigating the claim that Eversley was a key figure in these illegal activities and regularly brought men to the station, including a fellow municipal officer who is a suspect in her killing.

Sources said it was suspected that Eversley facilitated the use of municipal police vehicles for the transport of drugs and guns, and the escort of gang members during the conduct of criminal activities.

There are further allegations that Eversley and a suspect stole firearms and ammunition from the charge room—in small numbers—sold them, and split the money.

However, police are probing information that she was killed after a dispute whereby she insisted the theft continue on a small scale, but the suspect demanded that they steal all.

According to sources, Eversley was on duty last Saturday night and had told the two other officers who were also working that she would handle securing the charge room downstairs and that they could go upstairs to sleep.

Sources said a man came to see Eversley later that night, and they engaged in sexual activities.

Eversley’s body was partly clothed when found.

According to sources, a silver-coloured vehicle was parked outside the station and, after Eversley was murdered, the suspect signalled to two men in the vehicle to enter the station. They did so and carted out the guns and ammunition.

The Express was told that a prime suspect is a drug addict and is said to be the mastermind of the robbery.

Sources said police have intelligence as to where some stolen guns and ammunition are hidden, and people who are aiding and abetting these criminal activities will also be apprehended.

The Express contacted Police Commissioner Guevarro for comment yesterday but there was no immediate response.
