Independent candidate Nigel Bascus says he will support whichever party forms the next government if elected to represent St. John’s Rural West, arguing that collaboration is more important than political division.
Speaking on ABS Television’s “Know Your Candidate” programme, Bascus said he chose to run independently to avoid party constraints and to act in the best interest of constituents.
“I will align myself with any government,” he said, adding that leaders should “work together” instead of “bringing down one another.”
Bascus criticized the broader political culture, saying there is “more talk” than action and that promises often go unfulfilled. He said politics should be taken more seriously and focused on delivering tangible results for citizens.
“It’s a lot of promises, and at the end of the day, nothing happen,” he said. “We need more action.”
The candidate also pointed to what he described as pressing national challenges, including crime, youth unemployment and international visa restrictions. He linked rising crime to a lack of opportunities for young people, arguing that idle youth are more vulnerable to negative influences.
“The devil finds work for idle hands,” Bascus said, calling for expanded training programmes in fishing, mechanics and other trades.
A fisherman by profession, Bascus outlined plans to develop the fisheries sector, particularly aquaculture, which he described as a potential “multi-billion dollar business.” He said Antigua and Barbuda should focus on industries where it has natural advantages rather than relying heavily on imports.
“We have to work with what we have,” he said. “Instead of import, we need to export.”
At the constituency level, Bascus said he would prioritize waste management, youth employment and improved access to transportation and healthcare. He proposed creating a dedicated account for constituency funds and using his parliamentary allowance to directly assist residents in need.
“I’m planning to use my constituency allowance… and make an open account,” he said, adding that decisions on assistance would involve community input.
Bascus also said he would invest in practical support systems, including transportation for residents seeking medical care and resources to assist vulnerable families.
He is among three candidates contesting the St. John’s Rural West seat in the April 30 general election. His opponents include candidates from the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and the United Progressive Party.
In his appeal to voters, Bascus positioned himself as a non-traditional candidate focused on results rather than political allegiance.
“Politics need to be upgraded,” he said. “We’re going to make history.”
