Dr. Sándor Mihály, director of transplantation at the Hungarian National Blood Transfusion Service (OVSZ), has been elected chair of Eurotransplant’s Organ Process Chain Committee (OPCC), the OVSZ announced on its Facebook page on Thursday.
In the post, the organization called the appointment a significant milestone, as
this is the first time a Hungarian expert has headed Eurotransplant’s advisory body since Hungary joined the organization in 2013.
The new position creates an opportunity for even more effective international optimization and harmonization of organ exchange for the benefit of patients in need of transplants, while maintaining the utmost respect for deceased donors, reads the announcement.
Fact
Eurotransplant is an international non-profit organization responsible for the allocation of donor organs in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Slovenia.
The transplant centers in the Eurotransplant network register their patients waiting for an organ transplant in Eurotransplant’s central database with all the matching relevant characteristics. As soon as a donor becomes available, his or her characteristics are also recorded in the same database. Using a sophisticated computer program, Eurotransplant can instantly produce a ‘match list’ for every organ that becomes available.
