Wakan to have better road accessibility

    MUSCAT, JUNE 20

Just 35 degrees Celsius at 2 pm in June, and this is why Wakan Village in the Wilayat of Nakhal is known to be so popular. Now, a project to develop a road leading to Wakan is to be implemented.

Eng Masoud bin Said al Hashmi, Governor of Al Batinah South, affirmed that the project to develop the road leading to Wakan Village is considered one of the vital projects that represents a qualitative and important addition to the road network in the governorate, pointing out that this project comes within the framework of ongoing government efforts to enhance infrastructure and improve its efficiency in a manner that serves various development sectors.

He said that the implementation of such projects translates the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who places great emphasis on developing infrastructure across the various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, and on achieving comprehensive and sustainable development that addresses citizens’ needs and aligns with their aspirations.

In the press statement, he pointed out that the government is committed to implementing further development projects that enhance the quality of life and elevate service standards.

The implementation of the road development project comes as part of efforts aimed at strengthening infrastructure and connecting mountain villages. The project was recently awarded at a total cost of RO 6.9 million, in a step expected to support tourism and development activity.

The project includes the construction of a main road with a length of 6.5 km, in addition to a 2.2-kilometre link road connecting the villages of Wakan and Al Qawrah, bringing the total road length to 8.7 kilometres.

The project also includes a comprehensive package of construction and service works, most notably the installation of 260 street lights and the construction of 27 box culverts to manage water flow from wadis. This will help reduce the risks associated with water runoff and ensure the road’s sustainability and operational efficiency throughout the year.

The Governor explained that the project will directly contribute to strengthening connectivity between mountain villages and residential areas, which will facilitate daily mobility for citizens and residents, reduce the time required to reach various destinations, and elevate road safety levels on this vital route. He indicated that improving the road network in such mountainous areas is an essential element in achieving balanced development, due to its role in mitigating the geographical challenges that residents may face.

The project holds promising economic and tourism dimensions, as it will contribute to stimulating economic activity by facilitating the transport of goods and services, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and enhancing tourism appeal.
