NEW YORK – Oman has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting tolerance, coexistence and mutual respect during a high-level United Nations event marking the fifth International Day to Combat Hate Speech.
Speaking at the event at UN Headquarters in New York, Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence are deeply rooted in the country’s national identity and reflected in its policies and institutions.
He noted that under the leadership of Haitham bin Tariq, Oman continues to support dialogue, moderation and peaceful engagement at both national and international levels, building on its longstanding approach of fostering understanding among peoples and cultures.
Al Kathiri highlighted several national initiatives aimed at strengthening religious and cultural coexistence, including frameworks that support freedom of belief and cultural diversity, educational and awareness programmes that encourage dialogue and digital responsibility among young people, and cooperation with international partners and UN bodies to counter incitement and promote intercultural understanding.
The ambassador also reiterated Oman’s support for the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech, stressing the importance of coordinated international efforts to address the root causes of intolerance and build more inclusive societies.
A key focus of his address was the Muscat Plan, launched recently by Oman in partnership with the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect and the Network of Religious and Traditional Peacemakers. The initiative seeks to empower religious, traditional and community leaders to help prevent hate speech and extremism while promoting dialogue, mutual respect and social cohesion.
Concluding his remarks, Al Kathiri reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to working with the international community to strengthen respect and understanding among diverse societies, emphasizing that combating hate speech requires broad partnerships and collective action to ensure diversity remains a source of strength and enrichment.
