VIENTIANE: Luang Prabang city welcomed more than 800,000 visitors during the first four months of 2026, reinforcing its position as one of Laos’ leading tourist destinations, while also highlighting the need for improved management of tourism-related services.
More than 824,000 tourists visited the city between January and April, including 253,175 domestic visitors and 570,994 international arrivals, according to figures reported at a recent meeting on the management of restaurants and bars.
Deputy Head of the province’s Culture and Tourism Department, Sonephet Thammoungkhoun, said the steady growth in visitor numbers reflected the continuing appeal of Luang Prabang among both domestic and international travellers.
The city currently has 381 businesses providing food, beverage, entertainment and wellness services to support the tourism sector. These include 148 restaurants, 17 entertainment venues, and 39 massage and spa facilities.
During the meeting, authorities reviewed the implementation of regulations governing restaurants and bars and approved updated measures aimed at strengthening management and maintaining order in areas frequented by tourists.
Participants discussed ways to address challenges that can accompany tourism growth, including drug trafficking, prostitution, theft, arbitrary price increases, and other situations that could negatively affect the visitor experience and the city’s reputation.
The high number of visitors in the first four months of this year puts Luang Prabang on track to achieve ambitious tourism targets set by provincial authorities.
According to the Luang Prabang Provincial Culture and Tourism Department, the province aims to attract more than 2.3 million visitors and generate US$1.27 billion in tourism revenue. This target includes 522,270 domestic tourists and 1.78 million international visitors.
Tourism is one of the province’s most important income earners. Under the tourism development plan for 2025-2029, Luang Prabang aims to welcome 10 million visitors by 2029, including 6 million foreign tourists.
Authorities are investing in infrastructure upgrades and improvements at key attractions, including Kuang Xi waterfall, Xiengthong temple, Phu Si stupa, Luang Prabang National Museum and Tham Ting cave, while strengthening tourism service standards across the hospitality sector.
In 2024, Luang Prabang received more than 2.3 million visitors, including over 1.55 million foreign tourists. The city continues to gain international recognition, ranking among Asia’s top destinations and earning accolades for sustainable tourism development.
Situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan rivers, Luang Prabang is renowned for its well-preserved architecture, Buddhist temples, traditional culture and natural beauty. The historic town was inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1995. – Vientiane Times/ANN
