Guyana housing ministry seeks international help in investigation of contractor

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Jun 13, CMC – The Ministry of Housing and Water says it has enlisted regional and international law enforcement agencies, including INTERPOL and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in efforts to locate and investigate a contractor accused of failing to fulfil housing contracts that affected several families.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), said it remains committed to pursuing all legal, administrative and international avenues to ensure accountability and justice for people impacted by the actions of contractor Omar Malik and his company, DreamVu Homes.

The ministry said the matter relates to Malik’s failure to honour contractual obligations linked to the construction of Young Professional Homes.

According to the CH&PA, authorities had been actively investigating the issue long before it became the subject of recent public debate.

The agency said it issued several public notices, including advertisements in national newspapers and social media posts in August 2025, urging Malik to contact the ministry to settle outstanding financial matters.

It said that after those efforts failed, formal reports were lodged with the Guyana Police Force.

The ministry said that following Malik’s departure from Guyana, its Enforcement and Compliance Department expanded the investigation by engaging regional and international security agencies.

It said information related to the matter has been shared with INTERPOL, the FBI, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), and other international authorities for review and possible cross-border action.

The ministry said it has maintained contact with affected families throughout the process and continues to gather information, support investigations and pursue lawful options aimed at assisting those impacted.

“While every effort has been made to act swiftly and responsibly, the situation remains unfortunate and has caused significant distress to those involved,” the statement said.

The ministry also rejected criticism from political commentators who have questioned the response of regulatory authorities.

It described claims that state agencies had remained inactive as “entirely false” and said such assertions ignored the extensive multi-agency efforts currently underway.

“The Ministry strongly denounces and dismisses recent attempts by political commentators to weaponize the situation of these families,” it said, warning against what it called politically motivated attempts to distort the facts surrounding the case.

The ministry said it had acted with due diligence, followed established legal procedures and cooperated fully with relevant authorities.

It reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and the protection of citizens’ interests as investigations continue.
