More than an armored car: China’s vision of a modern digital battle tank
With the development of the Type-100 tank, better known as the ZTZ-100, China is indicating how it envisions the future of armored warfare.
Instead of the classic approach based mainly on thick armor and high firepower, the new tank concept emphasizes digital connectivity, active protection and cooperation with other weapons on the battlefield.
One of the most important features of the ZTZ-100 project is its role in a networked combat system. The tank is expected to operate alongside the ZBD-100 infantry fighting vehicle, with the vehicles exchanging information on targets, threats and unit positions in real time.
Such an approach means a departure from the traditional concept of a tank as an independent combat platform. Instead, it is becoming a hub in a wider digital network, writes the Militarny portal.
Less mass, more technology
The ZTZ-100 is said to weigh 35 to 40 tons, significantly less than modern Western main battle tanks. The lower level of physical protection should be replaced by advanced sensors, radars, electronic warfare systems and active defense systems against missiles and drones.
Chinese engineers are apparently betting on the belief that in modern warfare it is more important to detect a threat in time and avoid it than to simply take a hit with thick armor.
Unmanned turret
A special feature of the vehicle is said to be an unmanned rotating turret. The crew is supposed to be located in a protected part of the hull, which increases the chances of survival in the event of a hit.
According to some estimates, the tank was operated by only two soldiers. Part of the shooter’s tasks would be taken over by automation, supported by artificial intelligence and advanced target detection and tracking systems.
Advantages of the new approach
A lighter tank offers many logistical advantages. It is easier to transport by rail, road and bridge, uses less fuel and is cheaper to maintain. Additionally, multiple vehicles can be produced for the same amount of money.
Such features are of particular interest to armies that expect rapid movement of forces over long distances.
Risks and open questions
Despite promising solutions, many questions remain. The entire concept is based on the reliable operation of sensors, communication links and electronic systems.
If these systems were disabled due to malfunction, electronic jamming, or battle damage, the light tank could quickly lose a significant portion of its advantages. It is also not yet clear how the ZTZ-100 would fare in direct combat with heavier western tanks such as the leopard 2 and M1 abrams.
