What began as a family lime at Harry’s Water Park in Tabaquite ended in tragedy on Sunday night when four people, including a nine-year-old child, were gunned down along Lady Young Road, Morvant.
Police said the victims had spent the day at the water park with relatives and friends and were heading home around 7.50 p.m. when their vehicle, a red Mitsubishi Lancer, was ambushed near the Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Dead are 23-year-old Obataiye Okerian Latiff of Don Miguel Road, San Juan; 20-year-old Chelsea Edwards of Belmont; Asim Armstrong of Mc Shine Road, Belmont; and nine-year-old J’layna Armstrong of Nicholasville, San Juan.
A fifth occupant, a 23-year-old of Gonzales, was wounded and taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he remains in stable condition with gunshot injuries.
According to police reports, gunmen pulled alongside the vehicle and opened fire, sending it careening across the roadway before it collided with another car. Responding officers found the four victims inside with gunshot wounds and no signs of life.
Witnesses reported hearing a series of explosions as the attack unfolded.
Crime scene investigators later recovered 30 rounds of 5.56 ammunition, 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a projectile fragment from the scene.
Police believe the attack may be gang-related.
