It is Ministry of Education (Minedu) decided to advance the closing of the school year in five High Performance Schools (COAR), located Lambayeque, Piura, Tumbes, La Libertad and Áncash, regions in the northern part of the country, as a contingency action against the alerts that predict a El Niño Phenomenon of extraordinary magnitude, between October of this year and January 2027.

A technical evaluation by the General Directorate of Specialized Educational Services (Digese) determined that schools present structural risks due to the occurrence of intense rains, floods, floods and overflows; especially in temporary modules or with critical limitations in their storm drainage networks.
“We have the responsibility to anticipate scenarios that could put the safety of our students and teachers at risk. Therefore, we have made the decision to adjust the school calendar in the COARs of Lambayeque, Piura, Tumbes, La Libertad and Áncash, guaranteeing at the same time compliance with teaching hours and the continuity of the educational service,” said the head of Education, María Esther Cuadros.

According to the restructuring of the COAR academic calendar, in-person school activities will end early on Wednesday, December 2, 2026.
In order not to reduce teaching hours after bringing forward the closing of the school year, the Minedu established that third, fourth and fifth secondary school students must attend classes during the days declared as non-working days.

In this way, according to the mandatory recovery schedule, classes will be held during the holidays of June 29, July 23, August 6 and October 8, 2026. Likewise, the suspension of work for the management week set between October 12 and 16 was canceled, and it was arranged that Friday, August 7, will operate under the regular school day modality.
“We are acting with foresight and responsibility. Our goal is for students to complete the school year in safe conditions, without affecting their learning or the quality of education they receive in the COARs,” the minister emphasized.

The Ministry’s measure seeks to protect a total of 1,373 third, fourth and fifth secondary school students. 292 schoolchildren in Lambayeque, 278 in La Libertad, 270 in Tumbes, 268 in Piura and 265 in the Áncash headquarters.
In parallel, the Minedu will begin working groups with the respective regional governments to carry out maintenance and hydraulic reinforcement works in the five COARs. Minister Cuadros stressed that “education cannot stop, but we cannot expose our students to risks that can be prevented. That is why we are making timely and responsible decisions.”
