It’s about money that Hungarian authorities confiscated from cash transport vehicles belonging to the Ukrainian Oschadbank at the beginning of March.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy plans to speak with Hungarian Prime Minister-designate Peter Magyar about the return of funds that Hungarian authorities seized from Ukrainian Oschadbank cash-in-transit vehicles in early March. The Ukrainian head of state said this on television on Monday, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
“We still want to get the money back. They confiscated part of our funds. (…) We will talk to Magyar. I believe that they should return it. Orban (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor, note) simply stole this money,” said Zelensky.
On March 6, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Hungarian authorities in Budapest had arrested seven Ukrainian citizens – employees of Oschadbank – and confiscated the funds they were transporting. According to him, the employees were traveling in two bank vehicles on the way between Austria and Ukraine and transported cash as part of routine business transactions between state banks. Kiev emphasized that 40 million US dollars, 35 million euros and nine kilograms of gold were transported in the vehicles as part of an agreement with the Austrian Raiffeisenbank and were declared accordingly.
On March 10, the Hungarian government passed a special resolution regarding the cash and gold confiscated from Oschadbank’s vehicles. The assets will remain under the control of the Hungarian authorities until the investigation is completed. On April 12, parliamentary elections were held in Hungary, from which the Tisza party led by Peter Magyar emerged victorious. He is expected to officially take office as prime minister in May.
