Thirty educators from secondary schools across Dominica have successfully completed a regional professional development programme aimed at strengthening mathematics instruction and enhancing the use of technology in the classroom.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence, Dominica’s participation in the Advancing Caribbean Teachers (ACT) in Mathematics Cohort 2 initiative has concluded. The Ministry reports that the programme brought together teachers from Dominica, Barbados, and Grenada as part of a collaborative regional effort to improve mathematics education.
The press release shared that the initiative involved 30 participants representing all 14 secondary schools on the island, along with the Learning Support Advisor for the West.
The ACT in Mathematics Cohort 2 programme was supported by the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). In Dominica, activities began with a two-day in-person workshop held on November 13 and 14, 2025. Participants then continued their professional learning through an online Community of Practice that utilized platforms such as Moodle, Zoom, WhatsApp and COL Commons, as per the release.
Reportedly, participants demonstrated a high level of engagement throughout the programme and embraced a variety of innovative teaching approaches designed to improve student learning outcomes in mathematics.
Officials say that teachers were trained in the application of the programme’s “5 Master Moves” and incorporated a range of digital learning tools into their teaching practice. These included GeoGebra, PhET, Polypad, Didax, Wordwall, and Liveworksheets. Participants also employed gender-responsive teaching strategies aimed at creating more inclusive classroom environments and improving student participation in mathematics.
The initiative also encouraged greater collaboration among educators, strengthened participants’ confidence in using educational technology and supported Open Educational Resources (OER) credentialing.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to the various stakeholders who contributed to the programme’s success, including school principals, Heads of Department, participating teachers, the University of the West Indies Mona Campus and the Commonwealth of Learning.
Stakeholders described the initiative as an important opportunity for educators to enhance their skills and share best practices while contributing to ongoing efforts to improve mathematics education across the region.
