Ebola cases explode in Congo. More than 900 people suspected of being infected

The World Health Organization warns of the expansion of the outbreak Ebola from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where over 900 suspected cases have been identified, of which 101 have been confirmed. The epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment, has already claimed hundreds of lives in several provinces of the African country.

“As surveillance efforts have been stepped up in response to the #Ebola outbreak in #DRC, more than 900 suspected cases have been identified to date, of which 101 have been confirmed,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a social media post on Sunday, which did not provide an update on the death toll.

Ebola is a deadly viral disease that is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. This can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.

The country declared an outbreak of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo strain on May 15, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment. In an earlier briefing published on Saturday, the Ministry of Health of the DR Congo said there were 204 deaths in three provinces of this vast country of Africa Central, out of a total of 867 suspicious cases.

Over the past 50 years, Ebola has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa.
