GoodFood – Regular consumption of tea reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, a number of cancers and age-related memory decline. Study published in the magazine Beverage Plant Research by specialists from the Tea Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
However, it is important in what form you drink it – bottled tea and bubble tea can negate all the benefits.
What does regular tea give?
The main benefits are associated with polyphenols – especially catechins, which are especially abundant in green tea. They help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels and maintain normal weight. Several large cohort studies have shown that people who regularly drink tea are less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer.
Separately, scientists note two unexpected effects. First, tea slows cognitive decline in older adults and reduces markers of Alzheimer’s disease. Secondly, catechins help maintain muscle mass in old age, which means they support physical activity and strength.
Where does the benefit end?
Bottled tea and fancy bubble tea drinks often contain sugar, artificial sweeteners and preservatives. According to the authors of the review, such additives can neutralize or significantly reduce the beneficial properties of the drink.
An additional reason for caution is the possible presence of traces of pesticides, heavy metals and microplastics in tea. With moderate consumption, this does not pose a serious threat, but for those who drink tea in large quantities every day, the question remains open. It is also worth considering that tea interferes with the absorption of iron and calcium – this is especially true for vegetarians.
Thus, freshly brewed tea is a simple and affordable way to maintain health. Bottled versions and sweet tea drinks are best consumed in moderation.
