The Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) has become one of the most prominent security models specialized in the field of securing major sporting events and events in the world, based on extensive cumulative experience gained over years of work, development and training, leading to the historic success achieved by the State of Qatar in organizing and securing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
This tournament represented an important turning point in the journey of the Qatari security system, after it demonstrated its ability to manage one of the largest global sporting events in accordance with the highest international standards, including crowd management, securing facilities and stadiums, protecting official delegations and audiences, and dealing with various security scenarios with high efficiency and professionalism.
The security success achieved during the Qatar 2022 World Cup was not just an achievement related to a passing sporting event, but rather it has become an international reference in the security of major sporting events, and has become a model from which countries and security institutions around the world can benefit.
This experience has contributed to consolidating the position of the State of Qatar as a global center for specialized security expertise, and has opened the way for the participation of Qatari security cadres in securing a number of major international tournaments and events, within the framework of strategic partnerships and close cooperation with friendly countries and international sports organizations.
As part of this growing international appreciation, the Qatari Duty Force of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) is participating in securing the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Recently, His Excellency Mr. Tariq Ali Faraj Al Ansari, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Canada, received the Qatari force at Abbotsford Airport in Vancouver, marking the start of its duties within the security system approved for the tournament until its conclusion on the seventh of next July.
This participation comes in implementation of the letter of intent signed between the State of Qatar and Canada last January in Doha, which stipulates the provision of support and Qatari security expertise derived from the experience of hosting the 2022 World Cup.
This step was widely welcomed within Canada, as it reflected the level of confidence enjoyed by Qatari security competencies, and the distinguished reputation that Lekhwiya has gained in the field of securing world championships.
In this context, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Minister of the Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), stressed in a post on the X platform, the importance of this participation, saying, “The Qatari Duty Force begins its tasks in participating in securing the 2026 World Cup, as the security competence of the State of Qatar, thanks to the vision of His Highness the Emir, may God protect him, has become widely appreciated internationally. There is no doubt that this force will provide a model that enhances Qatar’s leading position in securing major tournaments.”
This participation reflects the continued growing Qatari role in supporting the security of international sporting events, especially since the 2026 World Cup will be the largest in the tournament’s history in terms of the number of teams and host countries, which requires an advanced security system and specialized expertise in crowd management and operational coordination between the various concerned parties.
Hence the importance of benefiting from the Qatari experience, which succeeded in presenting an integrated model during the 2022 World Cup, which has become the subject of praise from international sports and security institutions.
Lekhwiya’s international contributions were not limited to the 2026 World Cup, but were preceded by many participations that strengthened its global presence. In France, the State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Interior and the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), participated in securing a number of the most prominent sporting events, including the 2023 Rugby World Cup, the Tour de France, and the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This participation came within the framework of a security cooperation agreement signed by the State of Qatar and the French Republic, which included the contribution of the Qatari security forces in multiple fields, including foot and cavalry patrols, combating terrorism, disarming and removing explosives, operating drones, riot control, cybersecurity, and civil security management of international sporting events.
The force participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics included a number of specialized security units and teams, including the “Fidawiyya” special unit, personal protection groups, explosives disposal and removal, cybersecurity, security cells, foot and mounted patrols, anti-drone teams, in addition to command and control, planning, supply, and search and rescue teams. This participation confirmed the level of development reached by the Qatari security system and its ability to operate in complex and diverse international operational environments.
As part of preparations to continue this international role, the State of Qatar is also participating in securing the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games in the Italian Republic.
At the local level, Lekhwiya is working to develop its security system and operational capabilities on an ongoing and periodic basis. It has participated in securing major events hosted by the country, including the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix, the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, and the Confederations Cup for Clubs, as well as the preparations related to the bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
The force also maintains its high readiness to protect internal security and enhance national stability, which was clearly demonstrated during its distinguished participation in the country’s National Day celebrations, where it showcased its various specialized units and their advanced human and technical capabilities.
The Lekhwiya Internal Security Force has proven that the security success achieved during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was not a circumstantial success or linked to a specific event, but rather was the result of a long-term strategic vision and continuous investment in the human element, modern technology, and professional training.
Today, with the expansion of its international participation in France, Italy, Canada, the United States and others, Lekhwiya continues to consolidate its position as a reliable partner in securing major global tournaments, and an ambassador for Qatari competence in international forums, thus enhancing the presence of the State of Qatar and its pioneering role in supporting security, stability and the success of global sporting events.
