AIRAI, Palau (April 6, 2026) — Airai State marked its 36th Constitutional Day on Sunday with the inauguration of its 10th Constitutional Government, with leaders outlining priorities centered on infrastructure, housing and public services.
President Surangel S. Whipps Jr., in remarks during the ceremony, acknowledged Airai’s ongoing collaboration with the national government. He cited the state’s role in supporting major public projects, including land allocations for a special education building, a new Airai Elementary School, a sports facility for the Palau National Olympic Committee, and a proposed site for a future hospital.
Whipps also encouraged newly elected leaders to follow through on their commitments. “Yes, it is time to walk the talk,” he said.
Norman Ngiratecheboet, in his inaugural address, outlined his administration’s priorities for the next four years, focusing on housing development, infrastructure upgrades and improvements to public services. He said these efforts aim to address everyday challenges faced by residents, including road conditions, access to housing and the quality of school facilities.
Community members attending the event expressed similar concerns, pointing to the need for improvements in basic services. One resident said better roads, expanded housing opportunities and enhanced school facilities would have a direct impact on families and young people, while emphasizing the importance of accountability in government commitments.
Speakers also reflected on governance and tradition in Airai. Victor M. Yano highlighted the importance of maintaining traditional leadership structures, including the role of the seven chiefs, as part of the state’s governance framework.
Former President Johnson Toribiong encouraged younger generations to take an active role in shaping the state’s future and noted the historical contributions of women in leadership roles in Airai.
The ceremony concluded with remarks from Helena Rois Yoichi-Arurang, who thanked the community for its participation in the event, which coincided with Easter Sunday.
