KUCHING (June 12): The inaugural ‘Smart Kid, Smart City Challenge — RoboWalk 2026’ will be held on July 18 at MBKS Boulevard as part of the Kuching Festival 2026 celebrations.
Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the programme, jointly organised by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and STEM Academy Sdn Bhd, aims to empower children through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, innovation, creativity and Smart City awareness.
“Through this programme, children are encouraged not only to learn about technology but also to become active contributors to the future development of our city,” he told a press conference.
He described the event as a reflection of MBKS’ commitment under the Kuching South Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Action Plan, which prioritises children’s participation, digital literacy and Smart City initiatives.
Wee said the organisers are targeting participation from at least 150 primary school students, along with parents, teachers and supporters.
Participants will design, decorate and showcase robot-themed costumes, props or wearable robotic creations inspired by innovation, sustainability, environmental responsibility and Smart City development.
“The champion will receive a trophy, certificate and RM500 cash prize, while the first and second runners-up will receive RM400 and RM300 respectively, along with trophies and certificates.
“In addition, 30 consolation winners will each receive certificates and RM50 cash prizes,” he said.
He added that all participants will gain exposure to STEM learning and take part in the inaugural RoboWalk parade.
While the competition is open to children aged seven to 12, Wee said the public of all ages are welcome to join the RoboWalk and support the initiative.
With the theme ‘Innovate, Decorate, Parade, Inspire, the programme aims to encourage creativity, artistic expression and innovation among children.
“While technology is important, the future of a Smart City ultimately depends on its people. A truly Smart City requires citizens who are innovative, creative, technologically literate and prepared to solve future challenges,” he said, adding that the event complements MBKS’ broader Smart City agenda.
Registration for RoboWalk 2026 is now open and will close on July 12.
Primary schools, parents, students, robotics clubs, STEM enthusiasts and community organisations are encouraged to register early.
Also present were deputy mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili and RoboWalk 2026 chairman Eric Tay.
