The authorities of Canada They are warning tens of thousands of migrants who entered the country irregularly to request asylum to leave voluntarily or be deported to the United States.
The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada began sending letters to refugee applicants who entered the country irregularly since USA starting June 3, 2025, after the entry into force, in March, of a new immigration law.
The Canadian authorities indicated that the measure may affect up to 30,000 people.
As noted this Wednesday by the newspaper Globe and Mailimmigration lawyers in the country have expressed their fear that people who have received letters from Canadian authorities will return to the United States and be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The letter states: “You must leave canada as soon as possible and confirm your departure with the Canada Border Services Agency. If you do not leave Canada, a deportation order may be issued.”
Some lawyers have denounced that the content of the letter contains “false statements.”
Before the entry into force of the new immigration law, it was easier for asylum seekers who arrived irregularly in the country to have the opportunity to present their case to the authorities.
But the changes to the so-called law C-12, requested by the sovereigntist Bloc Quebecois (BQ), have eliminated the possibility of migrants having a hearing before the Council on Immigration and Refugees (CIR) to accelerate their deportation.
The BQ demanded the elimination of the hearings, considering that the process encouraged the arrival of migrants fleeing the United States.
Bill C-12 It also prevents people who entered the country after June 2024 and who requested refuge a year after their arrival from having a hearing before the CIR.
