Demolition works are underway at the collapsed Sungai Musa Bridge.
KAPIT (June 12): Demolition works on the collapsed Sungai Musa Bridge in Katibas are progressing steadily as preparations continue for the construction of a new bridge under the Public Works Department (JKR).
The bridge collapsed on Sept 21, 2023, prompting the government to initiate plans for a full reconstruction to restore connectivity for longhouse communities in Katibas.
According to JKR Kapit engineer Jawa Gara, a substantial portion of the bridge structure has already been dismantled and lowered to the ground.
“The contractor is currently carrying out crushing works to reduce the size of the demolished components, making them easier to remove, transport and dispose of properly,” he said.
He said river clearance works are expected to be completed by the end of this month, subject to weather conditions and site circumstances.
“A temporary Bailey bridge was constructed shortly after the collapse to ensure continued access and maintain river crossing safety for road users during the demolition and reconstruction phases,” he added.
The new bridge is designed to offer improved safety, greater durability and enhanced sustainability providing a reliable transportation link for residents in the area.
The Sungai Musa Bridge reconstruction is scheduled for completion in April 2027.
