Six people were injured this Sunday, June 7, in a stabbing attack at the Penn train station in New York, one of the busiest in the United States, according to the city’s fire department.
All the victims are civilians and were taken to the hospital, the agency added.

Initially, Fire Department officials reported five injuries, but New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani updated the number to X.
“Based on the information available at this time, six people were stabbed and the alleged perpetrator is in custody,” he pointed out.

According to the mayor, it was the police forces of Amtrak, the national rail transportation company, those who intervened to end the attack and arrest the aggressor.
The circumstances of the incident are not entirely clear. However, City Comptroller Mark Levine said in X that the suspect is believed to be “a homeless person with emotional disturbances.”

All victims are expected to survive, he added.
One of them suffered serious injuries, two had moderate injuries and two had minor injuries.
The event occurred before the NBA Finals and the Soccer World Cup were held.
The incident occurred at a busy New York transportation hub shortly before two major sporting events take place in the metropolitan area next week: the NBA Finals and the soccer World Cup.
Madison Square Garden, located above Penn Station in midtown Manhattan, will host both games of the NBA Finals on Monday and Wednesday.

MetLife Stadium, located on the outskirts of the city, in the neighboring state of New Jersey, will host its first World Cup match on Saturday.
Security has been beefed up in the city ahead of the two events.
