PM Skerrit satisfied with progress on Goodwill Secondary School project site

PM Skerrit led visit at Goodwill Secondary School construction site

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said that work is progressing “very satisfactorily” on the new Goodwill Secondary School (GSS).

During a visit to the GSS construction site this week, Skerrit noted,  “As you can see, work is progressing very satisfactorily, very well. This is a huge structure, and that has taken into consideration a number of very crucial elements. The classroom sizes, the various labs, library, computer room, IT room, and so on…  PM Skerrit said.  “Physical education is crucial. We have created enough space for all necessary sports—basketball, netball, volleyball—to take place on the first floor, and of course, students will have the presence of the Pottersville playing field for other sports.”

According to him, the facility will be fully equipped and furnished once construction is over.

Furthermore, Skerrit stated that all structures have been completed and work is taking place: “You can see tiling, painting, all of the electrical is in place, all of the plumbing is in place, it’s a matter of just putting the fixtures.”

He boasted of the school’s resilience and its ability to survive any catastrophic impact.

“And of course, students can continue with school immediately after a natural disaster,” Skerrit noted.

He asserted that it is an exciting time for the Goodwill community and education.

“Having a conducive place for learning is priority number one for the government and the Ministry of Education,” he stated. “And this is why we have continuously made efforts to improve the physical structures and learning centres across Dominica, ensuring that all of our students can go to a class/school that is conducive to learning.”

The GSS, which was severely damaged following the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, is one of the six schools to be built under the China Aid Project. The others are the Sineku, Calibishie, Bellevue Chopin, Thibaud, and Tete Morne Primary Schools.

The contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), began the demolition of the existing structure on Monday, November 13, 2023.

The Government of Dominica, in partnership with the People’s Republic of China, broke ground on September 6, 2023, for the construction of the new secondary school.
