Russian hockey star Yevgeny Malkin will stay with the Pittsburgh Penguins for (at least) one more season.
“The best place, the best fans, I’m staying for another year,” he said Yevgeny Malkin said in a video posted by the Penguins, for whom he has played his entire NHL career, on their website. The forward, who turns 40 on July 31, had 61 points (19 goals, 42 assists) in the regular season and three points (two goals, an assist) in six playoff games this season.
Won the Stanley Cup three times
One of the best hockey players of all time, he won the Stanley Cup three times (2009, 2016 and 2017) and won seven medals in the World Championships for Russia, including two gold medals in 2012 in Finland and Sweden and in 2014 in Belarus. He played in three Olympic Games and remained without a medal, at the first in 2006 in Turin, he was the closest to the podium in fourth place.
Third on the club’s all-time table
In the 2008/09 and 2011/12 seasons, the 1.96-meter-tall player from Magnitogorsk won the Art Ross Trophy for the NHL’s leading scorer in terms of points, in the 2011/12 seasons the Hart Trophy for the league’s most valuable player, in 2009 the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs, in the 2011/12 seasons the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player selected by the Association of NHL players and in 2006/07 the Calder Cup for Rookie of the Year.
Drafted second overall by Pittsburgh in 2004, Malkin is the Penguins’ third all-time leading scorer with 1,407 points (533 goals, 874 assists). It lags behind Sidney Crosby (1761 points; 654 goals, 1107 assists) and Marie Lemieux (1723 points; 690 goals, 1033 assists). His 1,269 games are second only to Crosby (1,420) in team history.
Only Alex Ovechkin (1,687) has more points than Malkin among Russian-born NHL players.
