We probably have at least one object in the house that used to be completely white, but today it looks like it is several decades old. Switches, socket frames, kitchen appliances, ironing boards or plastic boxes acquire a yellowish tint over time, reminiscent of dirt that is impossible to remove.
However, the problem is usually not maintenance.
White plastic changes color over time due to the influence of sunlight, heat and oxygen from the air. Because of this, classic scrubbing often does not give results, because the yellow color is not only on the surface, but occurs in the material itself.
The good news is that there are a few simple tricks that can significantly improve the appearance of yellowed plastic.
Baking soda helps with slight discoloration
If the plastic has just started to turn yellow, regular baking soda can often help.
You need to mix two spoons of soda with a little water until you get a thick paste. Apply it to the surface, leave it for ten minutes, and then wipe it with a soft, damp cloth.
This trick works especially well on switches, outlet bezels, and other smaller surfaces that aren’t exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.
Alcoholic vinegar perfectly removes grease and deposits
With kitchen appliances, the problem is often not only a change in color, but also a layer of grease that has been deposited on the surface for years.
In this case, a mixture of alcoholic vinegar and water in equal proportions can help. It is enough to soak a cloth with it and wipe the surface.
For more stubborn deposits, you can sprinkle some baking soda, then pour vinegar over it. The resulting reaction will help to remove grease and impurities more easily.
Experts warn that rough sponges and wires can further damage the plastic. Small scratches that remain on the surface later collect dirt even more easily and accelerate discoloration.
Varicina is not a good solution either. Although at first glance it seems to whiten the plastic, in the long run it can weaken it and make it brittle.
You should especially avoid acetone, which can permanently damage the surface and leave stains that cannot be removed.
How to prevent plastic from turning yellow again
When you clean the surface, it is important to protect it from the factors that caused the problem.
Objects that are next to a window or in direct sunlight should be periodically sheltered or protected from UV radiation. Regular removal of dust and grease can also help the plastic retain its original color for longer.
Although yellowed plastic often seems hopeless, with a few simple tricks, many items can look like new again.
